Walking and Cycling to School

We encourage students to walk or cycle to school whenever possible. This supports students in developing independence, and regular physical activity is linked to positive health outcomes and wellbeing.

Walking to School

Students walking to school can access the Academy site via three student gates. We encourage students to use the entrance closest to their form room where possible.

• One gate is located at the rear of the Academy on Scatcherd Lane
• Two student entrances are located on Fountain Street:
  • One opposite the Hytal Kitchens building by the pedestrian crossing
  • One further up Fountain Street, opposite the junction with Watson Street

Cycling to School

The Academy provides a covered bike rack located within the school grounds, which is accessed via the top drive. Students may leave their bicycles or scooters here during the school day, but they should be locked.

Students who choose to cycle to school must wear a helmet while cycling. Failure to do so will result in students being unable to store their bicycles on the school premises during the school day.

Electric scooters are illegal to use on public highways, so they are not an appropriate form of transport to school, as such these are not allowed on the school site.

If students are brought to school by car, we encourage parents and carers to share journeys where possible. Students should be dropped off safely outside the school site.

To support road safety and traffic flow, we ask that:

• Bus stops are not used for dropping off or collecting students, as this causes significant disruption to traffic on the main road
• Parents and carers may use any entrance for drop-off or collection, but must:
  • Park considerately on surrounding streets
  • Not use the car parks or entrances of local businesses
