At The Morley Academy we have a well-resourced and highly experienced Careers Department. ‘Ms Sharp, who is Head of Careers and Guidance, Miss Foster, Careers Adviser and Mrs Ryder, Careers Adviser are based in the Careers Office opposite reception. Mr Cheeseman has also joined the team working with local businesses and Higher Education to arrange experiences for our students. They are available to all students for drop-in enquiries at break and lunchtime most days and they work closely with form tutors across all year groups at key points throughout the year, providing support during form time, PD lessons and assemblies which can be summarised as follows:

Year 8

Year 9
I Focus
  • Options Assemblies including curriculum updates and advice on Apprenticeships/EHC and Post 16 options (Term 2/3)
  • Options Evening where careers team are present for IAG and follow up careers meetings where requested (Term 2)
  • Looking Ahead Interviews in preparation for the Options Evening. (Term 2)
  • Year 9 students to be invited to the careers fair (Term 1)
  • Assemblies and PD events also used to outline the main post 16 options and to familiarise students with the range of options available to them.

  • Targeted 1:1 Careers interviews with a careers adviser
  • University Experience for selected students (Term 2)
  • Speed Networking event- Sulzer/Ahead Partnership (Term 1)

Year 10

  • Careers Fair with FE and Apprenticeship focus as well as HE providers (Term 1)
  • Further targeted 1:1 Careers interviews with careers adviser to follow up to Looking Ahead process (Term 1/2)
  • Sessions on CV writing and support for Apprenticeship applicants in conjunction with the Leeds Apprenticeship Hub and WYLP (Term 2)
  • Apprenticeship Hub Recruitment Fair in March at First Direct Arena (Term 2)
  • Informal ‘drop in’ careers sessions at break and lunchtime (Term 1/2/3)
  • Interview preparation sessions for post 16 colleges and apprenticeship applications (Terms 1 and 2)
  • EHC Interview Process with EHC staff at their Applicant Experience Events TMA (Term 2)
  • The careers team are available in school on GCSE results day to support post 16 transition

Start is a free, online careers platform designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. It combines the most comprehensive source of information with a personalised experience and career planning tools, helping our students to make more informed decisions about their future study and career options, as well as developing their employability.

Start includes:

A student profile: students build their profile and access personalised study and career information.
Modules: activities to guide students through the information on Start at the right time.
Up to date information: engaging content on what to study, where to learn and the world of work.
Locker: an online record of achievement to evidence skills for future applications and CVs.
Employability action plan: Students can set goals and stay in control of their career planning.

Interested in a few different career areas and want to see how they compare side by side? This tool from the LMI for All website lets you compare up to three jobs and look at how much they pay, what your day-to-day duties might be and whether there will be many job opportunities available in this career area in the future!

The CEIAG programme will be reviewed on an annual basis by the careers leader and adapted where necessary. This will take in to account any feedback from staff, students or external providers linked to the previous year’s activities.
